The trend started to go viral through the hashtag #오로라네일 (aurora nails written in Korean Hangul script), which has been used in over 195,000 Instagram posts, while the English version, #AuroraNails, is now attached to over 100,000.0.
How Aurora nails are created at the salon?
If you want a truly professional result, it's worth treating yourself to a full body job at a beauty salon. There are a few different techniques used by professionals to achieve the look of a basic holographic aurora, says Anastasia Totty, an educator at LeChat Nails. “Most of them are created using what nail professionals call white chrome,'” he explains. “It is a highly pigmented powder that has an aurora effect (light lavender or gold shade) depending on the lighting.”"
Your technician will first rub the nail with the iridescent chrome powder. So, according to Totty, a popular trend in South Korea and Japan would be to cut a piece of Mylar to the shape of the nail and add it on top of white chrome with modeling gel. Or he might cut a piece of holographic plate into an oblong shape smaller than the nail plate, "and place it centrally from top to bottom on the nail, using hard gel to encapsulate the plate and create a raised area," explains Rezler, "then paint with top coat for even more shine." To create your own aurora nails, Totty says to first file and prep your nails and apply a gel base coat. Then add two layers of gel in white or pastel colors and let it harden. Next, you'll want to use a gel top coat and cure it for 30 seconds before rubbing the white chrome powder on top with a silicone tool or eyeshadow applicator.
